​From the Mountains to the Boardroom
The Flint & Steel Story
Before employer branding had a name, our founder was leading remote expeditions across the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau, the jungles of Central America, and Canada’s North. In these extreme environments, we learned that culture isn’t a concept—it’s the key to team performance.
That insight sparked our first transformation. In 2000, we created a mountaineering and ice climbing film used to train pharmaceutical engineers in safe blood-handling practices across the U.S. and Puerto Rico—proving that lived experience drives learning, behavior change, and brand understanding.

At Self Management Group, Canada’s largest psychometric assessment firm, and in partnership with Caliper, we pioneered performance-based selection in pro sports (NHL, NBA) before building global-scale hiring systems for financial services, retail, pharma, and life sciences companies. During this time, we also implemented performance coaching and leadership programs based on the Managing Effort: Getting Results framework.

For over a decade, Flint & Steel led the Canadian practice for Universum, the world leader in candidate preference insights. We studied the aspirations of millions of job seekers in 40+ countries, led the Top Employer Awards, and helped organizations shape their employer brand strategy using data, segmentation, and perception analytics—all under the Universum banner, powered by Flint & Steel.
Throughout our journey, we’ve remained grounded in experiential learning—inspired by the philosophies of Kurt Hahn, and built on our founder’s roots as a senior expedition leader at Outward Bound Canada and mountain instructor at the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). That DNA still shapes how we design events, activations, and experiences that make EVP tangible.
